B.Sc. Theoretical Physics Full-time

Year: 2
2024/25 Session

Year 2 students on the BSc Theoretical Physics programme must pass at least 100 credits to proceed to Year 3, having failed a maximum of 20 credits from the following modules: Physics and Communications Skills (03 01149), Particles and Nuclei & A Quantum Approach to Solids (03 26017), and any optional modules. All other modules are progression requirements and must be passed to progress to Year 3. Students must pass Physics Laboratory 2 (03 00943) if taking this module.

A student may transfer onto the BSc Theoretical Physics programme from another Physics programme at the end of Stage 2 if they have achieved 70% or above in the Mathematics for (03 34465/03 34469). Such a student would normally be expected to have also passed the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics (03 00539) and Eigenphysics (03 00746) modules.

The following must be taken:

Module Title Code Credits Semester
LI Eigenphysics 03 00746 10 Semester 2
LI Electromagnetism 2 03 00953 10 Semester 2
LI Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics 03 00539 10 Semester 2
LI Mathematics for Physicists 2A 03 34465 10 Semester 1
LI Mathematics for Physicists 2B 03 34469 10 Semester 2
LI Optics 03 33964 10 Semester 2
LI Particles and Nuclei & A Quantum Approach to Solids 03 26017 10 Semester 1
LI Physics and Communication Skills 2 03 01149 10 Semester 1
LI Quantum Mechanics 2 03 17273 10 Semester 1
LI Statistical Physics and Entropy 03 17296 10 Semester 1

If you're doing the Lab Pathway, choose the following module and one option from the list below:

Module Title Code Credits Semester
LI Physics Laboratory 2 03 00943 10 Semester 1

If doing the Non-Lab Pathway, choose two options from the following list:

Module Title Code Credits Semester
